Winter Driving on Wyoming Roads
Winter in Fremont County can bring snow, ice and strong wind, and the distances between towns mean help may be far away. A little planning makes every winter drive safer.
Check before you go
Look up current road conditions and closures from the Wyoming Department of Transportation by calling 511 or visiting WYDOT’s travel site. Roads can close because of blowing snow even on clear days.
Prepare your vehicle
- Good winter tires with plenty of tread.
- A full tank of gas; don’t let it drop below half.
- An ice scraper, shovel and traction aid like sand.
- Jumper cables or a portable jump starter.
Pack a winter kit
Keep blankets, warm clothes, water, snacks, a flashlight, a first aid kit and a phone charger in the car. If you get stuck, stay with your vehicle and run the engine only in short bursts with the exhaust pipe clear of snow.
Drive for the conditions
Slow down, leave extra space between vehicles and watch for black ice on bridges and shaded curves. When conditions are bad, postpone the trip if you can.
