From Sinks Canyon to the foothills of the Wind River Range, the country around Lander is home to elk, mule deer, moose and bighorn sheep. Seeing them is a highlight, and giving them space keeps everyone safe.

Keep your distance

Stay well back from large animals and use binoculars or a zoom lens for a closer look. If an animal changes its behavior because of you, you’re too close.

Be extra careful in certain seasons

Elk can be aggressive during the fall rut and when protecting calves in spring. Moose can be unpredictable at any time of year.

Smart habits on the trail

Watch the road too

Wildlife often cross roads at dawn and dusk. Slow down and scan the shoulders, especially in winter, when animals move to lower ground.
